Richard Ramirez was born on Feb. 29, 1960 in El Paso Texas. His name on Wikipedia the free encyclopedia is registered as, 'Ricardo Leyva "Richard" Munoz Ramirez.' He was the youngest son of Mercedes and Julian Ramirez. His father Ricardo worked on the railroads and then became a hard working police officer who often let out his anger on his family with physical abuse.
As a child Richard sustained two serious head injuries. Once a dresser fell on his forehead and once a swing in a park hit him in the head and he became unconscious. Due to these head injuries he later experienced frequent epileptic seizures.
Richard also became strongly influenced by his older cousin Miguel (Mike) Ramirez when he was twelve years of age. Miguel was a decorated Green Beret combat veteran who had been to Vietnam and he showed Richard photos of his victims in the Vietnam War. This included photos of Mike raping Vietnamese women and some photos showed severed heads of women that Mike had abused.
Mike Ramirez smoked Marijuana since the age of ten and he bonded with Richard over the gory war stories that he told him. "Richie" as Richard was known, had witnessed the murder of Mike's wife Jessie when he shot her in the face with a.38 caliber gun during a domestic argument on May 4, 1973.
After the murder of Jessie, Richard became sullen and withdrawn from his family and peers and he dropped out of school and adopted odd sleeping habits.Then, when Mike Ramirez was found not guilty for the murder of his wife by reason of insanity, he was able to continue his gory influence over Richard after being released from the Texas State Mental Hospital in 1977.
When Richard was 22 he permanently settled in California. It was in California where Richard's first murder occurred on April 10, 1984. On this day in April 1984 a young girl, 9 year old Mei Leung, was found dead in a hotel basement in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco. In 2009 Richard Ramirez' DNA was matched to the DNA obtained from this crime scene.
The last crimes that Richard Ramirez committed occurred in August 1985 and altogether he has been accused of 13 murders, 5 counts of attempted murder, 11 counts of sexual assault and 14 counts of burglary.
Richard Ramirez received the death penalty on September 20, 1989 It is believed that Richard Ramirez has killed many more than the 14 people of which he has been accused / convicted of.
On June 7, 2013 Richard Ramirez died of cancer at the San Quentin Prison in Greenbrae, CA. Only the prison authorities know where his grave is located.
